These bad reviews are based on unrealistic expectations, December 25, 2012

This review is from: Stack-On QAS-1200-B Quick Access Safe Biometric Lock, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)

I got this safe for Christmas. I recently purchased my first handgun, and before I kept ammo in my house, I wanted a safe place to keep my firearm out of the hands of my nephews or whoever else might visit my home, so that no accidental firing ever happens in my home as a result of the wrong person accidentally getting their hands on my gun and me not seeing them.

First, I’ll list a couple of the pros with this safe, and then I’ll address some of what I believe to be overly-harsh cons in other people’s reviews.

    PROS:

    1) The finger scanner is easy to program and it works very well. Another reviewer stated that it only reads your finger print correctly 20% of the time. I don’t know what they are doing wrong, because that has not been my experience at all. I have programmed four of my fingers, and the safe opens on the first try with every finger almost every single time. When it does not open on the first swipe, I normally notice that its because I swiped my finger incorrectly, and it will open on the next swipe. I have also tried swiping non-programmed fingers, and haven’t had any false opens (didn’t figure I would, but its worth looking at regardless)

    2) I like the option of the second shelf. This unit really isn’t huge, but its big enough. If you have a bigger hand or a bigger gun, and you need more room to maneuver, the shelf is pretty easy to take off.

    3) The construction is sturdy and durable, doesn’t feel cheap. I like the way the door falls open and the padding on all the surfaces inside. Pretty typical as far as safes go, but I do like the feel of it.

    4) Great price. I didn’t buy mine, it was a gift, but compared to other similar safes, the price of this one is pretty hard to beat. Unless you have unrealistic expectations for this safe, I think you’ll find that you get what you pay for and more.

    ADDRESSING THE CONS:

Several people mentioned that this safe is easy to break into. I haven’t tried it myself, and I won’t, but I have seen the videos, and yes it does appear to be fairly simple if you know your way around safes and/or have watched the tutorial (erm, I mean warning) video on YouTube. But lets be real here. What is this safe for? It is mainly to hold your firearm that you most likely keep for self defense. If you have a home intruder, the idea is that they never get to a point where they are poking around in your safe, because you have already gotten to your gun and protected your home.

If you are keeping mounds of cash and other insane valuables in this safe, and trusting it to protect them in case you have a home invader when you are NOT home, then shame on you. Even if the burglar doesn’t know how to crack your safe, the safe is only a couple of pounds! They can take it home with them and spend all the time in the world trying to crack the safe! If you have super valuable items that you are trying to protect, either buy a bigger safe that can’t be thrown into a backpack, or get a safe deposit box at the bank. This is not the right product for you!

If you seem to think you have a toddler that can somehow “accidentally” break into this safe (seriously guys?), then I have a super easy solution for you. Put the safe out of range of a toddler. On a shelf they can’t get to, in your closet, be creative. Again, not a safe problem, a YOU problem.

If you have an older kid that you think might go check out YouTube so that they can figure out how to bust into your safe, then you have a problem with your kid, not your safe, and you should seriously consider either not keeping guns in your house at all or shelling out some more money on a more high dollar (and probably bigger) safe. It also might be time to have a little chit-chat with your kid about gun-safety and respect!

All in all, this safe does what it is advertised to do, and it does it well. It is a nice, quick access safe for your firearms and your valuables. So long as you do not heap unrealistic expectations on this product, I think you will be pleased with it. I know I am.

This safe has a sturdy steel construction and feels well constructed. It seems like it would be difficult to open without a key, fingerprint, or prybar. That’s about all the good I can say about it. There’s no handle on it, so you need to rely on gravity and the springs to push it open. I had to put something under the back to give it a slight forward slant to make sure the door would open, not the most reliable way I want my “quick access” safe to operate.

The fingerprint scanner is the main point of concern for me. My wife and I both scanned forefinger and middle finger for both hands. When you scan your fingerprint you have to scan it at least 5 times so it learns your print from different angles, that’s all fine and dandy. Except when you’re actually trying to open the safe it still takes a few tries to open the safe. I would say on average, no matter which finger we were using, it takes 3 swipes to open it up. There’s also a bit of delay from when you press the button to the green “go” light to scan. Add that time up, plus if in you’re in a panic you’ve got a bit of a bad situation.

There’s not much room inside. I don’t have big hands, I would actually put them on small/medium size, but I keep a full size gun on the top shelf and a pocket gun on the bottom. I can’t grab either and pull them out. I have to maneuver them out to where I can get a grip on it. True, there would be plenty of room to grab and go without the shelf, but then there wouldn’t be room for both guns.

This safe can be defeated by anyone in mere seconds. It’s NOT secure at all. All you need is youtube and a paperclip. Kids can open it and add their own fingerprints to the biometrics without adults knowing. This safe should be recalled.
