Gunvault MicroVault XL MVB1000 gun safe Biometric fingerprint

GunVault pistol safes are truly premium products that set the standard for the rest of the industry.  We know that security and reliability are prevailing priorities when you need our products, and that’s why GunVault pistol safes have the features you want.  Our Biometric scanner provides lightning-quick access, even in the dark. Improved high strength lock mechanism and precise fittings make it virtually impossible to pry open with hand tools. Battery powered for maximum security and easy portability. The MVB 1000 (MicroVault XL Biometric) uses fingerprint recognition, to access the safe contents. A high-performance algorithm is used to achieve speedy identification of enrolled fingerprints; and at the same time has a very low False Reject rate (FRR) for a given False Accept Rate (FAR). This self-learning algorithm of the MicroVault XL Biometric adds new minutiae to the fingerprint templates each time a user touches the finger print scanner, which decreases the likelihood of FRR, updates slight changes that might occur over time to an enrolled fingerprint, as well as to help distinguish variations. The MVB 1000 can handle a maximum of 120 fingerprint templates and comes standard with a 4 foot security cable that allows you to secure it to a fixed object, making it perfect for home and travel.

It has a great device for locking and unlocking. The only think that could have made this design better is if it came with its own handle, and maybe some straps tohold down your hardware during transporting. Otherwise, plenty of space, I have one 9mm, 3 clips in the pockets and 1 beside the weapon for when I go to the range.

I received this unit today and after struggling with the directions, which are poorly written, finally got it configured. The directions have bulleted text but refer to things like “repeat step 3” which is actually the fourth bullet. At any rate, I trained the unit and then tried to access it. In general I found that it was reliable about 3/4 of the time. If it gives you a “no” it is far more likely to reject you on the subsequent tries. You get roughly 4 tries before you have to press the start button again. After reading the much touted learning capabilities of this unit I decided I just needed to keep using it, over and over and over again and perhaps it would do better. I used it about a hundred times and its accuracy did not improve. I did find that if I held my finger at precisely the same angle, drug it across the scanner at a slow and even speed taking about 1 full second a swipe and kept pretty much the same pressure it would work maybe 9 out of 10 times. Think about this – I had to really hold my finger exactly the same angle, drag it in exactly the same direction and at nearly the same speed to get a 90% open rate. Now imagine someone is breaking into your home and you go to get your firearm and you get a negative – it is far more likely to reject you, Are you really going to have the presence of mind to drag your finger across the scanner in exactly the same, precise manner and be satisfied with a 90% open rate? By the way the advertisement claims the top is spring loaded – it is not. It pops open – barely and you have to grab the lid and pull it open.

On the plus side it is sturdy, the fit and finish are good and it is roomy enough for two handguns – my wife’s 38 and my 40 cal. In the end I can only say that if you are faced with a hostile intruder and you are under stress and trying to access this thing it will not open. I do not trust it and I strongly suggest that you ot purchase this item as it simply will not perform as expected. The advertisements and videos on the Gunvault website indicate this is the way to go in stressful situations because you don’t have to remember anything. Unfortunately you have to remember the precise angle, pressure, drag direction and timing to scan your fingerprint. At this point I am seriously considering returning the item – which will be the first time I have ever returned an item ordered from Amazon in literally hundreds of orders.

Final thought: if you buy this and you are faced with an armed intruder you and your family are more likely to die. Harsh criticism but well deserved.

UPDATE: I returned the item. To be fair to Gunvault I think this model WITHOUT the biometric scanner would be an excellent choice.
